It all began in Japan in 1994. The first PlayStation changed everything and paved the way for two decades of gaming hysteria since. Now finally, you can revel in nostalgia and relive the era that changed gaming forever with Sony’s new, reignited PlayStation Classic. The console comes pre-loaded with some classic games. But can the Sony PlayStation Classic play discs?
The Sony PlayStation Classic cannot play discs or any of your own games as the disc drive of the console is too small to work with CDs. Instead, the console comes pre-installed with 20 classic PlayStation One games.
What Games Are Pre-Loaded on the Sony PlayStation Classic?
A classic console would not be the same without some classic games, many of which we spent hours on in our youth. So which games have Sony pre-loaded onto the console? Here is the full list:
- Battle Arena Toshinden
- Cool Boarders 2
- Destruction Derby
- Final Fantasy VII
- Grand Theft Auto
- Intelligent Qube
- Jumping Flash
- Metal Gear Solid
- Mr Driller
- Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
- Revelations: Persona
- Rayman
- Resident Evil Director’s Cut
- R4: Ridge Racer Type 4
- Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
- Syphon Filter
- Tekken 3
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
- Twisted Metal
- Wild Arms
Can You Play A Game That Isn’t Preloaded?
The Sony PlayStation Classic does not function as a full-blown console in the same way that the original PlayStation did or indeed in the same way that other consoles on the market do.
The PlayStation Classic is 45% smaller than the PlayStation One and as such, the disc drive is not a functioning drive and is too small to hold CDs and discs. This means that any original PlayStation games that you might still have stored in the attic will not be compatible with the PlayStation Classic.
Similarly, the console does not come with any online connectivity features whatsoever, meaning that there is simply no way to download games or add games from the PlayStation store to your console. Instead, simply plug the Classic into your TV and a USB power supply and enjoy access to the 20 games that have been pre-installed.
Are The Games The Same As They Were With The Original PlayStation?
When booting the PlayStation Classic you will be greeted with a host of games that feel brilliantly familiar.
None of the games that have been pre-loaded have undergone an HD update, meaning they’re exactly the way you remember and we actually quite like it!
Every game is locked at 720p and the same classic 90s graphics mean highly pixelated characters and settings. You may experience slight frame-rate loss and slightly blurred images but wasn’t that the way it was?! They’re gritty and grainy and fill us with nostalgia!
Graphics aside, the games are all exactly as they were in 1994, following the same storylines and with the same backdrops and characters.
Is the PlayStation Classic the Same as the Original PlayStation?
Visually, the PlayStation Classic is simply a miniaturised version of the original and is 45% smaller, but that aside, the two are almost identical.
The console comes packaged with two wired controllers much like the original, as well as the classic three buttons on top; Power, Open and Reset.
The Power button allows you turn the console on and off, whilst the Open button allows you to switch virtual discs in multi-disc games. Similarly, Reset takes you back to the original game selection menu and creates a resume marker for the next time that you want to go back to a particular game.
The classic start up screen that I’m sure you all remember is the same, whilst you’ll also be greeted with the familiar PlayStation bootup sound.
